The Community Foundation of West Tennessee is proud to award a $25,000 grant to The Jackson Symphony in support of its Regional Music Centers initiative, expanding access to music education opportunities for children and families across Dyer, Henry, McNairy, Obion, and Weakley counties.
Through this investment, students in rural and underserved communities will have greater access to high-quality string and choral instruction regardless of income, transportation, or geographic barriers. The Jackson Symphony’s Regional Music Centers provide no-cost instruction, instruments for students who need them, transportation assistance, and performance opportunities that help children build confidence and connection through the arts.
The program is designed to meet students where they are by bringing professional music instruction directly into local schools, churches, and community spaces throughout West Tennessee. According to The Jackson Symphony, the initiative currently serves multiple counties across the region and continues to grow each year.
“Access to the arts should not depend on a child’s zip code,” Melissa Spurgeon, CEO for the Community Foundation. “We are honored to partner with The Jackson Symphony to help expand opportunities for young people in West Tennessee and support programs that inspire confidence, creativity, and lifelong growth.”
Research continues to show the positive impact music education can have on academic achievement, social-emotional development, and confidence in children. The Jackson Symphony has already seen firsthand how these programs create meaningful impact in students’ lives.
One student participating in a Regional Music Center program described it as “the greatest thing I’ve ever been a part of,” after performing on stage for the first time. Another student from a rural community proudly prepared for her first concert with support from the program, demonstrating how small moments of access and encouragement can make a lasting impact.
The Community Foundation of West Tennessee remains committed to supporting initiatives that strengthen communities, increase opportunities, and improve quality of life throughout the region.
